Studies and Skills in Sociology
At the Department of Sociology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), students are trained to acquire scientifically structured views on the social world. They are taught to identify problems existing in the world around them. They apply problem-solving skills to these social dilemmas and exercise their creative abilities to find solutions. They gain a general understanding of society, public institutions, and the market, which broadens their career horizons in various fields whose subject matter is directly and/or indirectly related to what they study. In particular, sociological studies at NKUA provide their graduates with the appropriate tools (theoretical and empirical) to comprehend contemporary social pathologies with scientific adequacy. They cultivate critical thinking and critical capacity and specialize students in research so that they are competitive in both academic and professional environments. They enable them to draft research proposals that not only describe the multiple dimensions of contemporary issues and difficulties, but also formulate their solutions. They provide appropriate and specialized knowledge and skills in a range of societal and economic fields. Graduates of the Department of Sociology, based on the general and specialized knowledge acquired during their studies, can contribute to national and regional development by promoting social cohesion through the elimination of discrimination, the examination of the proper functioning of existing social structures—organizations, networks, and the management of human and material resources.
The program has been structured so that its graduates can acquire not only all relevant professional rights but also the necessary flexibility demanded by the labor market of modern societies.
They can work in a multitude of organizations as professors, researchers, consultants/scientific directors or coordinators in educational and research institutions, in bodies that design and implement public policies, and in private companies e.g., in human resources management, cultural projects, communication, etc.
Career prospects
- Research and administrative participation in national, European, and international bodies addressing contemporary social problems, e.g., social exclusion, regional inequalities, refugee and migration issues, social cohesion, and gender.
- Research institutions for social sciences and humanities.
- Secondary education employment, adult training in IEVs and elsewhere.
- Organization, administration, and implementation of welfare state policies.
- Participation in the competitions of the National Commission for Human Rights (N.C.H.R.)
- Participation in public and private sector institutions related to the organization of employment and human resources management in general as a scientific collaborator and consultant (OAED, OTA etc.).
- Participation in public and private sector entities active in political and social affairs.
