Brief background

History & Academic Tradition

The establishment of the Department of Sociology at EKPA has been a demand of its academic community for decades. It was always based on the idea of utilizing a long tradition that began with the cultivation of social sciences first in the School of Law and later mainly in the Departments of Economics and Political Science and Public Administration, but also in the Department of Communication and Media, the Pedagogical Departments, even in the School of Health Sciences, the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, and in the Philosophical and Theological Schools.

Official Establishment & Commencement of Operations

The Department of Sociology of the School of Economics and Political Sciences of EKPA was established in 2019 (Official Government Gazette 13A/29-01-2019). It operated for the first academic year in 2019-2020. With the dynamic potential of the School of Economics and Political Sciences and EKPA in general, the appropriate conditions were in place for an immediate response to the challenges of launching the new Department during the 2019-2020 academic year. Simultaneously, the development of direct cooperation with the National Centre for Social Research (EKKE) helped further equip the Department with specialized collaborating teaching staff.

Formation of the First Provisional Assembly

By unanimous decision of the Senate at the meeting of March 5, 2019, the first Provisional Assembly of the Department was formed, consisting of the following faculty members:

· Alexandros – Andreas Kyrtsis, Professor, Department of Special Education, EKPA – President (until 08-31-2019)
