The aim of the Department of Sociology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is to train social scientists with high education and professional prospects. The sociological scientific discipline is cultivated on the basis of an exciting synthesis of theoretical knowledge and empirical research. Theoretical traditions are synthesized by observing processes that determine the historical development of societies through the use of methods and techniques of empirical analysis using quantitative and qualitative methods. Through the analysis and synthesis of social phenomena in the economy, politics and culture, the non-obvious mechanisms of social constitution and change of modern societies are highlighted. By cultivating critical thinking, the course aims to address widespread stereotypes and prejudices. Thus, it aspires to contribute to the scientific analysis of social phenomena and, through sociological research, to the design and implementation of social policy. It also combines sociological theory and research with interdisciplinary approaches, i.e. with related social sciences such as social anthropology, economic and political sciences, or social and economic history. It thus aims to develop skills in understanding and solving complex educational, managerial and business problems.
The graduates of the Department of Sociology can, based on the general and specialized knowledge acquired during their studies (compulsory courses and elective courses in individual social fields), be employed in a wide range of activities, both as freelancers and as employees with any kind of employment relationship.
