(2) LEARNING OUTCOMES

The subject matter of the Sociology of Sport aims at the methodical and systematic investigation, documentation, explanation, and understanding of the social meaning, social significance, and importance of Physical Exercise, Physical Education, and Sport. The focus is primarily on the diverse facets of Athletic Activity and above all on its dynamically changing and complex relationships with other social fields, which in turn influence its evolutionary orientations.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  • recognizes that modern sports and physical education are a derivative phenomenon of the modernization process of societies
  • it recognizes that the social meaning of sporting activity changes in correspondence with the socio-cultural space and time
  • understands that the expectations converging on the coaching role, the physical education teacher, and generally the sports scientist, which exert influence on their social action and communicative practice, change in correspondence with the aforementioned parameters

  1. Society, culture and sporting culture
  2. Physical exercise, physical education, and sports in the periods of modernity and postmodernity
  3. Principle of performance, performance society and sports
  4. Sociological theories as a tool for understanding the social meaning of sport and physical exercise
  5. Socialization, sports and sporting identities
  6. Systems theory, functional differentiation, and sport
  7. Sports as a relatively autonomous social system - Internal Differentiation - Sports teams - Differentiation of sports roles (Coach, PE teacher, etc.)
  8. Social space, social time and sports
  9. The human body in the perspectives of sport sociological thought. Natural Body, Virtual Body and physical exercise in the perspectives of the technological-digital revolution
  10. The transformation of social and moral values in sports: Doping, high-performance sports, and the coaching role within the perspectives of sports sociological thought
  11. Critical approach to the relationship between sports and the economy - commercialization of sports activity in the prospects of globalization
  12. Sports and political ideologies: Alternative forms of physical exercise, social classes, social integration, and social exclusion
  13. Critical thoughts on violence in sports

Process Description Evaluation
  • The course evaluation is conducted in the Greek language.
  • The assessment includes a written exam with essay questions, which accounts for 80% of the final grade for the course.
  • Students' active participation in the course and the optional writing of a paper each contribute 20% toward the final grade for the course.
  • The syllabus, procedures, and criteria of the evaluation are communicated to the students during the lectures. Relevant announcements and material are posted on the e-class electronic platform.
