Undergraduate Studies Programme of the Department of Sociology (NKUA)
Duration of Studies: 4 years
Total Courses: 40 (8 semesters x 5 courses/semester)
Structure: The programme includes: Compulsory Courses (M) and Optional Compulsory Courses (EC). The courses of the 1st year (1st and 2nd semester) are all Compulsory. In the 2nd year (3rd and 4th semesters), 4 Compulsory courses are offered per semester and each semester is given the possibility to choose one optional compulsory course. From the 3rd year onwards, in line with the general orientation of the Department, Applied Sociology in specific fields of investigation, the programme focuses on and delves deeper into issues of employment, technology, entrepreneurship, social inequalities and migration without neglecting or departing from the basic fields of Sociology. Therefore, the 5th, 6th and 7th semesters have 2 Compulsory and 3 elective compulsory courses from the above focus areas of the programme per semester. In the 8th semester, students have one (1) Mandatory course and 4 elective mandatory courses that delve interdisciplinary into Contemporary Issues in Social Research. Finally, there is also the option of a Dissertation which, together with the Dissertation Seminar, corresponds to and replaces two (2) optional compulsory courses.

The teaching hours for each course are three (3) and each course has six (6) The total number of credits per semester is mandatory 30 ects and 60 ects per academic year. The total number of credits required to obtain a degree is 240 ECTS.
The requirements for obtaining a degree can be summarised as follows:
1) Total number of courses and ECTS: 40 courses (240 ECTS)
2) Compulsory courses of the Department of Sociology: 25 courses (150 ECTS)
3) Optional compulsory courses of the Department of Sociology: 15 courses (90 ECTS).
Bachelor Thesis
Students may choose, if they wish, to complete a thesis, under the supervision of a faculty member of the Sociology Department in the 8th semester of their studies. The choice of thesis presupposes the choice of the course «Thesis Seminar,» which is essential for its methodological support. The thesis and the Thesis Seminar are equivalent to 12 ECTS. Instead of completing a thesis, students may alternatively attend and successfully pass two (2) elective compulsory courses of the Sociology Department, which correspond to an equivalent number of credit units (12 ECTS).

Practical Exercise
Students of the Department of Sociology have the opportunity to carry out internships through NSRF in institutions of scientific research and social policy. The internship is optional and takes place from the 6th semester onwards, corresponds to 6 ECTS, is evaluated by the Academic Supervisor on a grading scale from 0 to 10, which is not included in the degree grade but is indicated in the detailed grading.

Full attendance
The duration of studies in all four-year courses at Greek universities is defined by the legal framework in force at the time.
Part-time attendance
Exceptionally, the maximum duration of study may be exceeded under specific conditions as defined by the current legal framework.
Discontinuation of studies
Students have the right to discontinue their studies by submitting a written request to the Department's Secretariat in accordance with the current legal framework.
