(2) LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to approach and connect sociology and health by familiarizing students with concepts and contemporary social issues related to the field of health. Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:

Understand the concept of health in sociological terms and as a human right.
Understand the interpretive approaches to health and illness.
Understand social inequalities in healthcare.
Recognize the role of modern services and health policies.
Understand the relationship between sustainable development, climate change, and health.

(3) COURSE CONTENT

Sociology of health. Health and illness in sociological terms.
The enigma of health, conceptual and interpretive approaches.
The genesis of health. Salutogenesis.
Quality of life and health promotion. Public beliefs about health and illness.
Chronic diseases and diseases of civilization.
The role of modern healthcare services. Health policies and public health.
Social inequalities and health.
Vulnerable condition, vulnerable population groups, stigmatization.
Health services, social sensitivity and bioethics.
Feminism and healthcare provision.
Clinical research as an innovative health service.
Climate change, urban environment and health.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

(4) TEACHING & LEARNING METHODS – EVALUATION

DELIVERY METHOD	• In-person • Distance learning (Determined by the General Assembly of the department depending on the conditions and needs for the protection of Public Health).
Information and Communication Technologies	Use of PPT slides. Screening of films that support familiarization with the subject. Uploading of the course PPT slides to e-class. Posting of other bibliographic, supportive material. Support and encouragement of communication with students via e-class.

Student Evaluation

Process Description Evaluation	Written exam at the end of the semester with short-answer questions. At the end of the process, at least two (2) students remain and leave together. ή Oral examination at the end of the semester. The oral examination takes place in groups of three (3) to five (5) students in the presence of a second faculty/staff member (DEI/EDIP). Also: Students are given the opportunity to write a paper on topics proposed following a discussion with the students and subsequently posted on e-class. The paper accounts for 50% of the final grade. At the end of the semester, students must take a written or oral exam to earn the remaining 50% of the grade. The examination method may be modified by the General Assembly of the department (e.g., writing a waiver assignment) depending on the conditions and needs for the protection of Public Health.
