(3) COURSE CONTENT

In the Sociology of the Family course, students will understand the sociological terms for studying the family, which, for Sociology, constitutes a key social phenomenon that reproduces society's fundamental values and is the object of study and empirical research. In this way, emphasis will be placed on the comprehensive study of the institution of the family, on the importance of concepts and definitions that allow for an understanding of the variety of situations and patterns summarized by the terms «family» and «family/kinship relations» in contemporary as well as earlier periods. Among the dimensions of the course are the functions of the family group, the forms and types of cohabitation, alternative forms of cohabitation, the observed changes regarding how the modern family is organized and evolves, as well as issues connected to and reflecting broader social changes in the modern and postmodern condition or the significant problems families face today.
