General Capabilities
The bachelor's thesis constitutes a complex research endeavor that offers students the experience of familiarizing themselves with the necessary tools for further studies, while at the same time representing the final and most mature stage in the process of producing academic and research papers within the framework of undergraduate studies, and particularly of seminars. It should be noted that students begin to familiarize themselves with academic writing as early as their first year of study. They learn how to write papers, and this is a goal that has been set as a top priority in a growing percentage of courses. At the same time, students become accustomed to the systematic search for information and data, either through libraries (Greek and foreign) or through the use of toolkits such as MENDELEY or ZOTERO, among others. Thus, students are prepared for the final stage, which is the writing of the Bachelor's Thesis, which must meet the following prerequisites:
I) The Thesis is optional for obtaining a degree. Students may choose, if they wish, to prepare a thesis under the supervision of a faculty member of the Department of Sociology in the 8th semester of their studies. The declaration of the Thesis must mandatorily be made on «my-uni», following consultation with and approval by the supervisor.
II) The selection of the bachelor's thesis also requires the selection of the course «Bachelor's Thesis Preparation Seminar», which is necessary for its methodological support. The Bachelor's Thesis and its Seminar are equivalent to 12 ECTS and 6 teaching units. Instead of preparing a bachelor's thesis, students can alternatively attend and successfully pass two (2) elective required courses of the Department of Sociology, which correspond to an equivalent number of credit units (12 ECTS and 6 teaching units).
III) Structure of the Thesis: The thesis includes a title page (name or names of the authors/students, title, year, supervising professor/s), table of contents, abstract (in Greek and English), introduction, methodology followed, data and their processing, results and discussion, conclusions, any suggestions for further research, appendices (if any), and bibliography. The thesis is submitted typed and must have a length of around 16,000-20,000 words.
